A month or two back there was a Brazilian-Japonese event close to where I live (Man, I really miss these events, they suddenly stopped happening...). There was both a pretty big manga/book stand with some good-looking collections. I got 4 issues of Zetman, which I still have to read because I don't know anything about it, just thought the cover was cool. And there was also a stand with pirated CDs of Japanese shows, all very well organized.

While skimming through them, I remembered that I really wanted to check out Kamen Rider, and asked if they had any of the series, and the guy gives me this complete Kamen Rider Black CDs. Before that, my only interactions with the genre was watching Power Rangers as a kid and very few episodes of Jaspion on open TV.

I know it's silly to buy pirated copies of things you could find online, but it's nice to be able to watch it on my TV with little hassle, before that I had a really hard time finding Japanese media that wasn't anime/manga, and the guy went thought the trouble of making a menu for it so it wasn't a just copy and paste of episodes. Any way, went without watching it for a while until this week. And while watching it, with whoever subtitled it username on the left top corner, I wondered... is there a big Tokusatsu Brazilian fanbase?

And... Yeah, a pretty dedicated one, too. There are obviously the people who make Subs for them and place them online but also, which surprised me, plenty of national Tokusatsu works. Some are more like, teens filming one-off episodes. But there is actual effort in many.

Timer Man, as an example, only has one episode, but it also has two comic issues out. Pure self-insert fantasy, the creator and character are the same person, literary, same name and I bet he is a gym teacher as well. But I can't not respect the investment, the Catarse (Kickstarter) for the comics didn't even fund, and he went and done it anyway (the art looks really nice too, but I still have to get it). And the pilot isn't bad, obviously very inspired by the Genre and very fun, the problems on it are the same problems with most Brazilian indie creations that are based on Japanese media, more comedy aligned, which isn't bad... and not unfit to the genre... but I mean comedy that can show up at times when it would better not be. Like scenes that are supposed to be tense.

This is just the most recent, of course, I found all of them thought this blog (https://tokusatsu.blog.br/tokusatsu-nacional/), and it's a pretty huge list. INSECTOR SUN, that has two seasons, Blue Fighter, a 90s comic book series, Cruzer, Krom Sentinela do Espaço, Cyberbio....

Some have very goofy looking costumes, but the majority has some really decent costume design... all while being online indie creations! I do still have to check all of them, though. I think the time I would spend watching Kamen Rider will also go to invest in Brazilian productions.

And uhm... If you know Portuguese, or are just curious, check them out. I placed links to some, but on the blog it has links to most of them too. That's it. Thanks. oh, also, Christian Tokumatsu lol.
